The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced a zero-tolerance policy on all forms of verbal and physical abuse, particularly directed at match officials.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 28 May, ZIFA stressed that referees play a vital role in enforcing the rules of the game and must be treated with the respect and protection their position requires.
The association made it clear that disagreement with officiating decisions does not justify abusive or disorderly behaviour.
ZIFA also warned that anyone found guilty of misconduct will face the full consequences of the law. The statement reads:
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to remind all stakeholders across the football fraternity – players, coaches, club officials, supporters, and the general public – of the fundamental values that underpin our beautiful game: sportsmanship, mutual respect, and the preservation of dignity for all involved.
Recent incidents have brought to the fore the urgent need to re-emphasise these values. Football is a powerful tool for unity, inspiration and national pride.
It is incumbent upon every participant and stakeholder to conduct themselves in a manner befitting the spirit of the game.
ZIFA said all acts of misconduct will be met with appropriate sanctions, in line with the laws of the game and the association’s regulatory frameworks. It said:
We call upon all clubs, supporters’ groups, and community leaders to play their part in promoting a safe, respectful and professional football environment.
Let us uphold the integrity of Zimbabwean football by safeguarding the well-being of all who make the game possible.
