Kwekwe Polytechnic Student Gets 18-Month Sentence For Forging HEXCO Results

A 22-year-old student from Kwekwe Polytechnic College has been sentenced by the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court to 18 months in prison for using a forged academic document.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Carlos Tadiwa Mafuwe obtained a counterfeit Higher Education Examinations Council (HEXCO) statement of results with assistance from Chancemore Sibanda, the college’s Chief Security Officer.

Mafuwe paid Sibanda US$70 to alter his academic record, changing a failed module to a pass with distinction.

Mafuwe submitted the forged document to the college as part of the requirements to register for On-the-Job Educational Training (OJET).

The forgery came to light when examination staff noticed inconsistencies in the font size on the document and verified the results using the National Examinations Management Information System (NEMIS).

The court sentenced Mafuwe to 18 months in prison. Of this, three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining 15 months were also suspended, on the condition that he completes 520 hours of community service.
