A kombi driver from Harare says his employer burnt his hands with a cigarette lighter.
The kombi owner, Fortune Mbizo, is accused of torturing the driver, Saini Mwogeni, after accusing him of keeping some of the passenger fares from a trip to Guruve. Mwogeni suffered burns on both hands. Said Mwogeni:
I worked with him for only three weeks plying the Epworth-Mbare route.
On the day in question, I was hired to drop passengers in Guruve and on my return, I picked up passengers and charged them US$8 each.
Mbizo accused me of pocketing the other money, saying the charges were supposed to be US$12 each.
He locked me in a room and tortured me with a cigarette lighter.
He bragged about being connected to some police officers, saying the case will never be entertained and he would further deal with me and my family.
When contacted by H-Metro for comment, Mbizo said Saini travelled to Guruve without his permission and denied any allegations of torture. Mbizo said:
That man must tell you the truth, he does not have driving particulars, but I am surprised he is after fixing me. He went to Guruve without my consent, and I never assaulted him as alleged.
Mwogeni lodged a complaint against Fortune Mbizo at Epworth Police Station. The case was been registered under reference number RRB 6440786 and is currently under investigation.
