A former student of Chomuuyu Primary School in Mazowe has donated building materials worth US$7,000 to help complete stalled construction projects at the school.
The school has been grappling with ageing infrastructure and an increasing number of pupils.
Speaking to H-Metro, the donor, Cleopas Mupereki (40), an engineer, said he felt a strong desire to give back to the school that shaped his early years. Mupereki attended Chomuuyu from 1991 to 1997. He said:
When I last visited the school, I saw that there were projects which had already been started but were not progressing.
As a former student, my heart pains me to see that there are children who do not have proper classes or shelter to study in.
The community helped with gravel, laying of bricks and sand, so I am providing the finances.
Once we finish this block, I will also assist in repairing broken windows and roofs at the school.
The donation included cement, roofing materials, window frames, glass panes, GPC, and other essential supplies.
Chomuuyu Primary School deputy headmaster, Ishmael Tongai, described the contribution as the first of its kind and said it would ease the school’s infrastructure challenges. Said Tongai:
It is difficult to manage lower-grade classes because they are overcrowded.
This school serves many villages and the enrolment numbers are high.
The new block will lessen the burden on our few available classrooms, especially during the rainy season.
