Two Senior Scurity Agents Killed In Pile-up Accident In Masvingo

Two senior members of the security services lost their lives on Wednesday evening in a multi-vehicle accident near Mutimurefu Prison Bus Stop along the Masvingo–Mutare Road.

According to The Masvingo Mirror, the deceased have been identified as Gift Nyama, the head of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) in Gutu District, and Principal Correctional Officer Masimba Blessing Mandimutsira of Mutimurefu Prison.

The second vehicle involved in the pile-up was a Ford Ranger single-cab belonging to the Officer Commanding Masvingo Central District, Chief Superintendent Simangaliso Dube.

Initial reports indicate that Nyama, who was driving from Gutu following a farewell party, crashed into a stationary tractor parked in the middle of the road without any lights or reflectors.

Mandimutsira and other officers arrived at the scene to assist. While they were attending to the accident, Dube’s vehicle, travelling from the direction of Mutare towards Masvingo, reportedly attempted to avoid the obstruction, veered off the road, and fatally struck Mandimutsira.

Nyama had earlier attended a farewell event said to have been held at 4/2 Brigade in Mpandawana on Tuesday.

Among the attendees was Walter Manjonjo, a senior member of the ZANU PF provincial youth executive from Ward 33 in Gutu.

Nyama is reported to have died at the scene of the accident from a suspected broken neck, while Mandimutsira succumbed to his injuries at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.

The accident occurred at a known black spot, which also claimed the lives of two other officers last year.

ZRP Spokesperson in Masvingo Province, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, was unavailable for comment. However, Superintendent Francis Makonese, Officer-in-Charge of Prisons, confirmed the incident in a statement.
