City Of Harare Breaks Silence On Durawall Erected On Railway Line

The City of Harare says it instructed a Chinese businessman to remove a wall he had illegally built on top of a railway line, and he complied with the order.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 21 May, the council thanked residents for bringing the issue to its attention and encouraged the public to report any suspected illegal developments to help combat lawlessness in the city. The statement reads:

The City of Harare has taken action against a Chinese businessman who had illegally constructed a wall on top of a railway line.

The City of Harare wrote to the Chinese national ordering him to take down the wall or the City would do it. The businessman took down the wall.

The City of Harare would want to thank the residents for raising the issue as we work together to fight lawlessness in the city.

We urge residents to bring to our attention any suspected illegal developments in and around the city.

On Monday, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) said that the wall had been built on a disused, privately-owned railway siding that once served a now-defunct factory.

The property was recently purchased by a Chinese-owned company, which erected the wall for security purposes. The NRZ said it had no jurisdiction over the disused line.
