The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) is racing to alert candidates about a timetable blunder that scheduled two Ordinary Level mid-year exams on a national holiday.
Students were initially advised they would sit English and Combined Science papers on Monday, 26 May. However, that date now coincides with the observance of Africa Day, which falls on Sunday, 25 May this year.
In Zimbabwe, when a public holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the following Monday, rendering 26 May a non-working day.
ZIMSEC is now working to inform affected candidates of the revised exam dates, though concerns remain over the short notice and potential confusion.
Speaking to ZimLive, ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini admitted an error in the exam schedule and confirmed that any exams initially set for May 26 had been moved forward to May 23 after a review of the dates.
However, concerns remain about whether all candidates, particularly private candidates outside the school system, have been properly informed of the change.
Dlamini said that exam centres have the responsibility to contact all registered candidates and keep them updated on any changes to the exam calendar. She added:
A circular was sent out to all schools along with the statements of entry. All candidates will be advised by their centres. ZIMSEC is also communicating through its various channels.
