The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has called on the public to help protect vulnerable children from harmful cultural practices that go against their rights and put their future at risk.
This comes after a man from Shamva was found guilty by the local magistrates’ court for illegally pledging his 14-year-old daughter in marriage. He was handed a 12-month prison sentence.
According to the NPA, the incident happened on 3 March 2025 at Red Dragon, Shamva. The man accepted US$55 from another man as part of a lobola (bride price) arrangement, effectively agreeing to marry off his underage daughter – a clear breach of Zimbabwe’s child protection laws.
Out of the 12 months, 4 were suspended on condition of good behaviour, so he’ll serve 8 months behind bars.
