The government says things are steadily improving at Hwange Power Station, with several units now back up and running after recent technical issues.
According to the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Units 1, 2, and 3 were back online by Thursday afternoon, together generating 212 megawatts (MW). Unit 3 is still ramping up and expected to push the total output to around 260 MW.
Meanwhile, Unit 4 passed all its safety and performance checks and was set to be reconnected to the grid on Thursday. Unit 6 is still offline but is expected to be back in service by 27 May 2025.
The recovery comes after a major technical fault on 4 May, which saw acid leaking into key components and disrupting generation across several units.
Despite the setback, Zimbabwe’s electricity generation has seen a boost. As of Friday, 16 May, Hwange was producing 929 MW, while Kariba contributed 400 MW. Independent Power Producers chipped in with 44 MW, bringing the national total to 1,373 MW.
The progress at Hwange is expected to help ease ongoing power shortages that have been affecting both households and industry.
