ZRP Vehicle Hit By Train In Gweru After Officer Fails To Stop At Level Crossing

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mahindra vehicle was damaged after being struck by a train at a level crossing in Gweru on Tuesday, 13 May.

According to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the incident occurred when the police officer driving the vehicle failed to stop at the crossing, as required by regulations. Said the NRZ:

This is the second such incident this year following a similar incident in January involving a ZRP Ford Ranger driven by a police officer.

We urge all drivers, including police officers, to exercise extreme caution at road/rail crossings.
Always come to a complete stop check for approaching trains, and proceed with caution. Never attempt to race a train.

On 18 January 2025, a police officer was injured when the official vehicle he was driving was struck by a train at a level crossing in Marondera.

The police officer failed to observe level crossing rules which instruct all drivers to stop and only proceed after establishing there is no train approaching.

The officer was chasing a fleeing kombi when the collision occurred.

  1. Driving is driving, one should just Stop at Rail/Road level crossing,Simple. No one should be reminded and if one gets hit, then surely the blame is his/hers.

  2. Most of the drivers are under the impression that, our Railway Locomotives are no longer operational hence do not check when approaching Railway crossings. Life is precious guys. Let’s check before proceeding.
