Zimbabwean professional golfer Morton Kombai was killed in a car crash while four others were injured, just hours after the conclusion of the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open in Harare on Sunday night.
Kombai, a respected member of the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA) based in Zvishavane, died at the scene when the vehicle carrying five players crashed at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Seventh Street.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) and ZIM Open Committee confirmed the accident in a joint statement on Monday. Reads the statement:
We are heartbroken to confirm the passing on of Morton Kombai, a respected member of the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA) who died on the scene.
Based in Zvishavane and representing Roland Park, Morton was known not only for his talent on the course but also for his humility, dedication and love for the game. He is survived by his wife and two children.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fellow professionals. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this painful time.
The injured players, Zimbabweans Tonderai Masunga and Biggie Chibvuri (who was driving), Victor Kachepatsonga of Malawi, and Ghana’s Lucky Ayisa, are receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Kensington Medical Centre. All four are reported to be in stable condition.
The crash has cast a shadow over what had been a historic day at Royal Harare Golf Club, where Mexico’s Luis Carrera became the first non-South African in 24 years to win the Zimbabwe Open.
In a show of solidarity, members of the local golf community have raised US$3,000 to support the injured players and assist Kombai’s bereaved family.
