Mnangagwa Reverses “Unlawful” ZANU PF Suspensions

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who also serves as ZANU PF’s First Secretary, is expected to take action against officials involved in the “random” suspension of party members, following a politburo meeting held last week.

According to NewsDay, ZANU PF insiders said Mnangagwa condemned the expulsions as illegal, noting that due process had not been followed.

The ongoing restructuring process is reportedly causing divisions within the party ahead of next year’s provincial elections.

A politburo member, speaking anonymously, expressed concern over the suspension of Shadreck Mashayamombe by the Harare provincial leadership under Godwills Masimirembwa.

Mnangagwa has since reversed the suspension and called for an investigation into who was responsible. The politburo member said:

President Mnangagwa demanded investigations on who is behind the expulsions, some of which saw some procedures not being followed. Mnangagwa said he would crack the whip on those behind the expulsions.

Mnangagwa noted that Shadreck Mashayamombe added value to the party and was affected by rumour-mongering individuals in the party.

Mashayamombe is a cell member and, in line with the ZANU PF constitution, any disciplinary action against him should have been initiated at the branch level. However, the provincial leadership proceeded to suspend him.

It is alleged that Harare provincial chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa viewed Mashayamombe as a political threat ahead of next year’s provincial elections.

President Mnangagwa also overturned the expulsion of two members from Masvingo.

Speaking at a press conference following last week’s politburo meeting, ZANU PF national spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the President had cautioned against unprocedural expulsions, warning that such actions could undermine the party’s unity and stability. Added Mutsvangwa:

He does not tolerate clandestine suspensions and expulsions. ZANU PF is a revolutionary party rooted in the people, guided by the principle of leaving no one and no place behind…

Rather than removing members, the party opted for reprimands where necessary. This approach reflects the President’s leadership style — focused on healing divisions and strengthening the party from within.
