A fisherman was trampled to death by an elephant on Saturday night in Kariba.
Never Kahondo was walking from ARDA Fishing Camp to Gache-Gache Fishing Camp, near Lake Kariba, when he was attacked by the elephant.
Kariba resident Luke Timire said the fisherman was only a few metres away from Gache-Gache Fishing Camp when the elephant charged at him.
Timire said Kahondo fell to the ground and was left helpless, lying in a pool of blood until local residents arrived to help.
He was rushed to Gache-Gache Clinic, but sadly died from his injuries before he could be transferred to Kariba District Hospital. Said Timire:
It all happened so fast. The fisherman tried to run, but the elephant was too quick. When we got there, he was lying in a pool of blood. We did our best to get him to the clinic, but unfortunately, it was too late.
Tichaona Manzungu, chairperson of the Gache-Gache Fishing Association, said the community was deeply saddened by the loss. He said:
It’s a sad day for our community. The deceased was a hardworking fisherman, and his death is painful and a loss to the family and the community.
We urge everyone to be vigilant and avoid walking alone at night, especially in areas known to have wildlife.
We will work with relevant authorities to enhance safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.
