Zimbabwe has launched a new online visa system that lets travellers from countries that need a visa apply for one over the internet, replacing the old paper-based method.
The government has expanded its Online Border Management System (OBMS), which was first introduced last year, to cover more immigration services. These now include electronic visas (e-visas), electronic permits (e-permits), and other key processes.
With the new system, people can now apply for visas, residence and work permits, and complete travel clearance electronically.
Chief immigration officer Respect Gono told state media that the e-visa system will make things easier by getting rid of the need to send paper applications through the post or visit consular offices. She said:
The major highlights of the OBMS are the e-visas, e-gates and e-permits.
The e-visa facility is now fully functional and nationalities from countries that require prior visa approval can apply online.
The e-visa has eased the burden of having to send manual applications through postal services or having to travel to the nearest consular offices for visa application services.
This was costly, cumbersome and time-consuming, but now people can apply from their comfort zones, enjoying convenience, reduced paperwork and a host of other benefits that come with the electronic platform.
Gono also said that the e-permit system is now being rolled out for visitors who plan to stay in Zimbabwe for a longer period. She said:
When people come to Zimbabwe with intentions to stay longer, they are required to apply for residence permits, which are also now being facilitated through an online platform for e-permits.
The development of the e-permits platform is still in progress and modules for temporary employment permits, investor residence permits are now operational whilst other permit modules are still being developed.
