Police Officer Fined US$200 For Assaulting Teacher

A police officer has been found guilty of assault after attacking a schoolteacher with a baton, causing internal injuries. The Chikombedzi Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence last week.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Owen Manjengwa (40) was ordered to pay a US$200 fine or serve 90 days in prison if he fails to pay.

In addition, a four-month prison sentence was wholly suspended for five years, on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period. The NPA said:

On 21 February 2024, at approximately 1500 hours, at Mhlanguludzi Primary School in Chikombedzi, Chiredzi District, the offender—a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police stationed at Chikombedzi Police Station—approached the victim, a teacher employed by the Ministry of Education.

The officer was investigating a case of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances that had occurred the previous day at the school.

He was in the company of other police officers and informed the teacher that he was under arrest for the same case.

The complainant denied the allegations, and the officer then assaulted him with open hands on the face and with a button stick on the buttocks, resulting in internal injuries.
