A police officer, Peter Loverage Mombe (36), has been sentenced to 10 months in prison following his conviction of Criminal Abuse of Duty as a Public Officer.
Mombe was arrested and arraigned before the courts after demanding a US$800 bribe to release a truck carrying lithium ore.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed that on 02 August 2023, at the Engen Service Station in Harare, opposite VID Eastlea, Mombe demanded a bribe from truck owner Francis Nembire.
The truck had been impounded for allegedly transporting lithium ore without the proper removal permit.
After Mombe repeatedly contacted Nembire demanding the bribe, the truck owner reported the case to the Police Internal Investigations.
A sting operation was organized with trap money to catch the corrupt officer in the act.
At the service station, Nembire handed over the US$800, wrapped in tissue paper, to Mombe.
Upon receiving the money, the officer noticed the approaching law enforcement officers and tried to flee, discarding the cash. However, he was quickly apprehended.
