A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) detective, Constable Nomore Muradzikwa, has been granted bail of $100 by the High Court after allegedly shooting his colleague, Detective Constable Cassandra Hove, last month in Bulawayo.
The incident occurred on 06 March 2025 while the detectives were pursuing suspects involved in armed robbery in Pumula South suburb. Muradzikwa was arrested on March 17.
Muradzikwa’s lawyer, Tinashe Tashaya, said in court that the shooting was accidental. He said during a fight with the armed robber, a bullet hit the robber’s arm and bounced off, striking Hove in the chest.
The judge, Justice Nokuthula Moyo, granted bail on Tuesday and set the next court date for April 15. Said Tashaya:
The applicant will state that he and his other colleagues did not notice that the bullet had hit the now-deceased since she was not bleeding.
They only got to know that a bullet had hit her when they arrived at the clinic and nurses were trying to rescue her.
Tashaya argued that, since two guns were fired during the incident aimed at the robber, Muradzikwa and his team were unaware of which bullet struck Hove. He said:
The police had to wait for the removal of the bullet during post-mortem and a ballistic report for a conclusion on, which gun released the bullet, which shot the now deceased. This explains the delay in the arrest of the accused.
Tashaya said Muradzikwa was aware of the investigation and the results of the ballistic report before his arrest.
He argued that if Muradzikwa had intended to flee, he could have done so, but instead, he waited for his arrest and is ready to face trial.
Tashaya further argued that Muradzikwa is aware that the witnesses are all police officers, making it difficult to interfere with them since they are trained in the law.
As part of his bail conditions, Muradzikwa must stay at his given address until the case is resolved. Justice Moyo also instructed him not to interfere with witnesses or the investigation and to check in with the police once a week.
The State, represented by Kudakwashe Jaravaza, had opposed the bail, arguing that there was no guarantee Muradzikwa would not run away given the serious nature of the charges against him.
