Strides Made, But HIV/AIDS Elimination Requires More Work – NAC

Raymond Yekeye, the acting chief executive officer of the National AIDS Council (NAC), acknowledged that while Zimbabwe has made significant strides in the fight against HIV, more efforts are still needed to eliminate HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Speaking at the opening of an Editors Workshop in Chinhoyi on Tuesday, 01 April, Yekeye said HIV continues to be a critical public health priority that requires ongoing, collective action to address. He said:

We cannot afford complacency. Your voices (media) can help keep HIV high on the national agenda, advocate for resource mobilisation, and hold stakeholders accountable.

Your presence here underscores the vital role played by editors in shaping public understanding, influencing behaviour, and ultimately contributing to our national response to HIV and AIDS.

As gatekeepers of information, your commitment to accurate, responsible, and impactful reporting is indispensable.

This workshop has been designed to provide you with the latest information on the HIV and AIDS landscape in Zimbabwe, including the impact of the recent funding cuts by the United States government.

The two-day workshop follows a recent tour by journalists in Mashonaland East Province. This is part of NAC’s ongoing efforts to build stronger partnerships with the media, which plays a key role in raising awareness.
