Journalists Interrogated By Police During Harare Demonstrations, Released Without Charge

About nine journalists were rounded up by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers on Monday, 31 March, outside Harare Magistrates Courts.

The arrests followed a flash demonstration by a group of people at the Robert Mugabe Square who had heeded former ZANU PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza’s call for demonstrations.

The journalists were released after being interrogated about who they were interviewing during the protests and which media outlets they worked for.

The journalists were profiled and screened before being released without charge.

The police issued a statement dismissing images and visuals of protesters as lacking credibility, while also threatening journalists for allegedly sharing “old videos” to cause “alarm and despondency in the country.”

However, this denial fell flat, as various media platforms widely shared the latest updates from the Harare protests.

Meanwhile, Police have denied that a woman who was interviewed by journalists at Robert Mugabe Square was one of their own.

In a statement, the ZRP denied claims that the woman, light in complexion and wearing a white T-shirt, is a member of ZRP Glen Norah.

Police warned that the law will take its course if it is proved that the woman in the video is impersonating the Police in her activities.
