Children Report Mother To The Police Over Newborn’s Death And Concealment

Police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Ireen Pamela Govati, who is being sought in connection with a murder case that occurred on 8 December 2024 at a house in Hopley Zone 6, Waterfalls, Harare.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Paul Nyathi said Govati allegedly gave birth to a baby boy and hid the infant in a 20-litre plastic bucket under her bed. The bucket was discovered by the suspect’s daughter and niece, both aged 12, after they heard the baby crying.

Govati allegedly later took the baby to her tenant, Rejoice Mapfumo, who held the baby by the legs and threw him twice onto the ground. The baby died on the spot.

Govati and Rejoice Mapfumo reportedly went on to bury the body in a shallow grave.

The case was reported to the police by the children on 8 December 2024, leading to the retrieval of the body and the subsequent arrest of Rejoice Mapfumo.
