The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa has said it strongly condemns government threats on journalists.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, CCC condemns threats on journalists saying they play a critical role in enhancing democracy, therefore, they must be allowed to conduct their duties freely. Reads the statement:
We have noted with great concern the continued threats, harassment and intimidation of journalists by the regime in Harare. We add our voice in support of all journalists who are subject to threats, harassment and worse, because of the work that they do. It should be obvious to all Zimbabweans that this harassment and threats by top government officials are unacceptable. When the threats come from government officials, it is even worse. The work of journalists is vital to an informed public and a healthy democracy. Criticism, critical analysis and exposing unethical practices come with the job. We strongly condemn this behavior. A CCC government will support all members of the fourth estate, both from the private and public media houses. We will pay attention to the safety of journalists and to respect press freedom, which is vital to a functioning democracy and exposing wrongdoing.
The statement came after President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba, threatened to jail journalists who report on Gold Mafia, Al Jazeera’s documentary which exposes gold smuggling operations in Zimbabwe.
Charamba said the documentary was defamatory.
The documentary implicates some government officials and institutions in the illicit trade of gold.
Al Jazeera is scheduled to release episode 02 of the documentary this Thursday.

All the CCC can do is just condemn this, condemn that. This is their last chance to take power from Zanu pf. Failure to that they must become extinct, this business of claiming rigging and lack of action is wasting precious time for fellow Zimbabweans. Instead of speeches, hashtags or press conferences lay out your action plan for your supporters to know in the event that there is a disputed election, what are you going to do to ensure the peoples vote is protected? Will Nelson Chamisa lead a demonstration from the front like all good political leaders should??? The courts are said to be captured, will he approach them with his team like last time claiming they had overwhelming evidence to support their rigging claims and come back to the people empty handed??? CCC don’t be a rebranded political outifit with the same tendancies you have displayed in the past, old wine in a new bottle doesn’t work it still tastes the same.
