Election Boycott Is Out Of The Question - Mahere

Fadzayi Mahere, the interim spokesperson of the Citizens Coalition for Change, has said the opposition party does not harbour intentions to boycott the 2023 election.

Speaking at a recent presser held in Harare, Mahere dismissed reports that the party led by Nelson Chamisa was considering boycotting the election over pending electoral reforms. Mahere said:

So without a doubt, we have said I think since the CCC was announced on the 24th of January 2022, that we’ve been preparing for this election from day one. A boycott is out of the question.

Mahere also it is upon the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to champion electoral reforms as required by the constitution.

She said the party has a political reform agenda which is being pushed by the party’s Members of Parliament.

In previous years, Nelson Chamisa, a former Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, threatened to boycott elections if ZEC is not reconstituted.

However, Mahere says a boycott is out of the question likening an election to Christmas which comes whether individuals are prepared or not.

She cautioned that her statement does not mean the CCC did not care about political reforms saying it was the only political outfit that has managed to put pressure on ZEC for the implementation of political reforms.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold harmonised elections in July this year.
