Hwange Community Pleads For Protection From Chinese Miners

Residents of Hwange and surrounding communities have implored Parliament to enact laws that compel Chinese coal mining companies operating in the area to desist from environmental degradation and respect labour laws.

There are more than 10 mining companies mining and processing coal in Hwange.

Speaking at a consultative meeting conducted by the Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development in Hwange, residents urged the government to protect local people and the environment, reported CITE.

Local communities raised a number of issues they want to be addressed, among them, environmental degradation, pollution, failure by mining companies to plough back to the community, destruction of infrastructure such as roads, exploitation and victimisation of labour.

Parliament is consulting citizens towards crafting a Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill that seeks to shape the future of mining activities in the country.

  1. Surely the Chinese companies needs to respect the labour laws of this country. Imagine workers working 7 days a week. When do workers rest and have time with their families. Workers always dirty and wearing overalls, no timebof buying food and other necessities because that is the purpose of getting employed phela. The issue of pollution abd infrastructure dilapidation caused by Chinese trucks cannot be over emphasized as this is very big concern to us staying in Hwange. The government to should cow these people instead of letting them do as they want abusing the Zimbabwean peope

  2. The Chinks will do whatever they want to do, knowing that nobody will touch them. They are the No 1 friends of No 1.

  3. It’s high time Zimbabweans did something about these issues of Chinese miners versus the communities where they work. Vanodheerera! These Chinese are also operating companies in the USA and other countries but they tore the line. Chitando this is your ball and it’s coming at curved… Words of warning are not enough!

  4. This is not unexpected! Zimbabwe is heavily indebted to China, who has bought up a large chunk of the foreign debt zpf have amassed over the decades and failed to pay back! China will get that debt paid in full, and on their terms. Zimbabwe will slowly, but certainly, be “purchased”, bit by bit, and will soon be owned and operated by China. There’s no way out now. No thanks to what you citizens voted for, time and again, or did nothing to stop! So much for your “sovereignty” Zimbabwe! You’ll soon be a colony again… Of China!
