Corrupt Cricket Fan Tries To Influence Chevrons Star Into Match Fixing

A Zimbabwe cricket fan has been banned from all activities of the game for five years, after he unsuccessfully tried to influence Chevrons star Luke Jongwe into match fixing.

Walter Edgar Mupangano, a 27-year-old cricket fan based in Harare, approached Jongwe on August 4, 2022 and tried to convince the player to bowl in a pre-arranged manner during the ODI series against Bangladesh.

In return, Jongwe would get USD7000 from an unamed Indian bookmaker while Mpangano for his “facilitator” efforts,  would get USD3000 if the plan was successful.

Jongwe however reported the matter to Zimbabwe Cricket, who investigated.

Consequently, Zimbabwe Cricket has banned Mpangano from all cricket matches and events, for five years.

In a statement,  the national cricket governing body said;

As a result of his admission, ZC has banned him for five years from all ZC-affiliated cricket venues and/or events.

ZC believes cases such as this demonstrate the urgent need for Zimbabwe to have a legal instrument to make fixing and any other sporting corruption a criminal offence.
