Ramaphosa SONA: Police Justify Ejection Of EFF Members

South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has justified the ejection of members of the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from Parliament where president Cyril Ramaphosa was delivering a State of The Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday.

The red berets stormed the stage when President Cyril Ramaphosa started delivering his speech.

After numerous disruptions, National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was forced to suspend proceedings.

Cele said the police had no choice but to eliminate the threat and eject the opposition party. eNCA News cite him as saying:

There was a threat there of the head of state. As police we have to react.

Remember, we have a history in this country where the Prime Minister was killed in the House.

So we are not going to wait too much to see if there was blood flowing or not. We had to act.

It’s unfortunate that it happened but I’m very sure that is correct the police had no other way of responding.

After numerous disruptions, National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was forced to suspend proceedings after the red berets stormed the stage.

The protection services forcibly removed the EFF members.

The media reported chaos and tension outside the City Hall as well.
