🇬🇧👮❌✊FT: Britain will tighten measures to suppress protests by law enforcement agencies

As the Prime Minister of the kingdom, Rishi Sunak, noted, it is necessary to maintain a balance between the rights of individuals and the rights of the working majority who are engaged in everyday affairs

The UK authorities will develop a set of measures by which law enforcement agencies will be able to promptly ensure law and order and suppress public protests. This was reported on Monday by the Financial Times newspaper.

According to FT, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, intends to expand the legal definition of "serious violation", which will allow the police to more effectively stop and restrain the actions of protesters who use such protest tactics as blocking roads and slow processions. "The right to protest is one of the fundamental principles of democracy, but it is not absolute. It is necessary to maintain a balance between the rights of individuals and the rights of the working majority, which is engaged in everyday affairs," the newspaper quotes him as saying.

This week, the government will submit an amendment to the bill, which is currently under consideration in the House of Lords, the FT clarifies. The amendment will give a clearer idea of when the police should intervene in the course of the protest in order to prevent serious violations of law and order by the "destructive minority". Law enforcement agencies will not consider a series of protests by the same group as separate incidents, but will be able to take into account the cumulative effect of repeated actions that resulted in multiple violations.

A number of human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), have criticized the plans of the British government. "The right to peaceful assembly and the right to protest are key pillars of civic space and people's involvement in civil society. We are witnessing an open attempt on them by this government," said the acting director of HRW, Tirana Hassan. She also noted that the UK could move "from the list of countries that protect human rights to the list of their violators."

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) has called for credible electoral processes, including the delimitation of electoral boundaries, to ensure that the 2023 elections are free and fair.
Speaking during an election resource centre-hosted delimitation meeting in Harare on Saturday, CiZC spokesperson Obert Masaure claimed that the upcoming elections have already been rigged in favour of ZANU PF. He said:

Are we going to sheepishly submit ourselves to an election when we know that these are flawed processes?
People are going to say no let’s rationalise and allow this process to go. Allow an election that has already been rigged?
We all know that everything is pointing toward rigging the elections. We have a State media which remains biased and a military factor as well.
Why are we participating? Are we doing it in the sense that we want development and democracy in Zimbabwe?
If we want democracy we have to say enough is enough and get to a point where citizens say away with this delimitation process.
We will go to an election when the voters roll and the State media is accessible to all players and when the military is no longer part of our politics.
These reforms are serious and must be done. We, therefore, submit that Zimbabwe isn’t ready for elections and we urge those who want to participate in the process to call for credible electoral processes.

The Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) also alleged, in its January 13, 2022 review paper titled: Zec Delimitation Report: Electoral Rigmarole and Elite Discohesion accused the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of gerrymandering to benefit ZANU PF.
