Secondary Schools’ Sport Returns

The National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) has given schools the green light to resume secondary school sports during the first term which starts on Monday.

Schools sport resumed in mid-June 2022 but schools failed to vaccinate 70 percent of the learners as required by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, and as a result, sports remained in limbo.

NASH president Arthur Maphosa said secondary schools are now ready to resume sports. He said:

We are happy with the resumption of sport in schools. We would like to confirm that schools can go ahead with their sporting activities.

One thing the return of sport solves is the issue of indiscipline. These learners are young and energetic.

Once you stop them from taking part in sports they misplace their energy and get involved in the wrong trends which lead to them being indisciplined and a menace not only in society but at school as well. I can say for now it’s all systems go in terms of resumption.

Schools sports were banned by the government in 2020 as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.

As a result, national competitions such as the Copa Coca-Cola football tournament, NASH and National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH) athletics competitions were frozen. | Chronicle
