Dutch Police Attack Moroccan Fans Celebrating 2-0 World Cup Win Over Belgium In Qatar

Dutch riot police attacked Moroccan football supporters with batons on Sunday as they were celebrating their country’s shock 2-0 World Cup win over Belgium in Qatar.

Police took action in Rotterdam, where some 500 people gathered near the city centre, as well as in The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht, Dutch police tweeted. Said police:

Supporters threw fireworks and glass at the riot police who then carried out charges.

The Netherlands’ large Moroccan community burst into celebrations, lighting torches and fireworks and driving around hooting car horns and waving Moroccan flags shortly after the match ended.

The Moroccan football team has a massive following in the Netherlands.

Dutch-born winger Hakim Ziyech, whose goal just before half-time was disallowed, is a particular favourite, having started his career playing for Amsterdam’s Ajax for four years before transferring to Chelsea in 2020.

Morocco got goals from Romain Saïss (73′) and Zakaria Aboukhlal (90+2′).

Morocco’s victory over Belgium was their first win in five games at the World Cup (D2 L2). Meanwhile, it was the first time that they’d recorded consecutive clean sheets at the World Cup since 1986.

This was the first time that Belgium have been defeated in the group stage in 14 such games at the World Cup (W8 D5), while this loss against Morocco ends an eight-game win streak in the groups.
