IMPACTS

  • Hot daytime conditions can affect the health of vulnerable members of society and all other persons if exposure to direct sunlight is for an extended period of time.
  • Lightning can strike even when clouds are distant and seemingly under blue skies, this is a scientific phenomenon called lightning from the blue.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • When outdoors, on the farm, or performing other outdoor activities for extended periods of time please wear a sunhat or be under an umbrella to protect against direct sunlight.
  • Keep hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water.
  • Even when lightning is seen in a distance, it might not be safe to be outdoors. The rough rule for noting the safe zone when you see lightning is the 30-30 Rule: If you see lightning and cannot count up to 30 seconds before you hear thunder, then you are not safe from the next lightning strike.
  • Where possible, install lightning conductors on buildings.
