Zimbabwe’s former Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Obert Gutu, has said South Africans, unlike Zimbabweans, would never demonise their country even in the face of unprecedented challenges.
The law expert said Zimbabweans need the Patriotic Act which will govern their conduct. He said:
There are unprecedented power cuts in South Africa. But we don’t hear South Africans demonising their country. In Zimbabwe, the usual suspects climb on rooftops & tell the whole world that their country is a failed state. Patriot Act is long overdue in Zimbabwe.
His remarks come as the ZANU PF government is trying to come up with the Patriotic Bill that has been viewed as an attempt to weaken opposition political parties and make some politicians ineligible to contest elections.
The Patriotic Bill which was proposed in August 2020 prohibits citizens from conniving with “hostile” foreign governments to harm the country by campaigning for the imposition of sanctions or related actions or speeches.
Critics say the bill will be used as justification to violate human rights as it gives authorities permission to snoop into private communications between citizens and officials of foreign governments.
Early this year, the issue of the Bill was brought up for discussion in the UK Parliament and legislators raised displeasure.

The reason why Zimbabweans demonize Zimbabwe is that everything is not going well. Those in government are destroying the country in broad daylight and nobody cares. South Africans get treatment in their own country, what about us. Zimbabwe is a rich country but is a shapeless and shameful state because of a handful of people who think being in government or occupying high political positions means looting the country’s resources for personal benefit.

South Africa is socially and politically inclusive of its citizens, unlike Zimbabwe. Everyone feels they belong. Zimbabwe has a Clan figure Nehanda glorified to national status – just one single clan. Why not the others? National status and tax Payers monies should be for inclusive modern political leaders. There are no opposition politicians languishing in SA jails. You can say anything about the President and any politician; you will never be arrested. There are protests and demonstrations everyday somewhere in SA, nobody is arrest or killed by the authorities. No citizens are told they are foreigners in their own country and no race or tribe claims ownership of the country at the expense of others. Courts work, even against the President. Zuma goes to Court. In Zimbabwe the President is untouchable and can say whatever he like about citizens without being held accountable. Tribalism reigns in Zimbabwe. All provinces are equal in SA. No tribe crowds other tribes from jobs and business opportunities in their home areas in SA. Zimbabwe is dominated by revenge politics and evil.
