Victoria Falls Residents Vow To Block Mayor's "Golden Handshake"

Victoria Falls residents have expressed opposition to the city council’s plans to offer a golden handshake in the form of a car to mayor Somvelo Dlamini at the end of his term.

Dlamini (MDC Alliance), who is Ward 9 Councillor, succeeded Sifiso Mpofu as Victoria Falls mayor.

He was elected to council in 2013 and was re-elected in 2018 where he eventually became the mayor.

The Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association (VIFACORA) said residents vowed to block the council’s proposal to award Dlamini the vehicle.

VICAFORA recently held two meetings on separate days with residents at Chinotimba Hall to gather their views about the council’s proposal.

Speaking while updating residents on the residents association leadership’s meeting with council officials, Dlamini said:

The council has proposed to give the mayor the vehicle when he leaves office. It is this same vehicle that was used by the previous mayor and residents want to know why he (the previous mayor) was not given the vehicle. We also want answers on the council’s plan on what the next mayor will use.

The residents said the local authority was not in a position to buy a vehicle for the new mayor after next year’s elections.

They said the council should prioritise service delivery which was deplorable, instead of buying a new vehicle for the mayor.

The residents also said that all deals made by councillors and management without consulting them should be stopped and reversed. | CITE
