New Party To Contest In 2023 Harmonised Elections

A new political party, United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) says it’s ready to usher in a new political dispensation in Zimbabwe.

UZA President Elisabeth Valerio said her party wants to contest next year’s elections and is currently in South Africa to engage with Zimbabweans living in the diaspora.

SABC News quoted Valerio as saying Zimbabwe is facing a number of challenges and is desperately in need of radical change. She said:

Zimbabwe is a beautiful country so I know there are challenges we face. We are ready, particularly in the political arena.

It’s necessary for us to stand up for what is happening because the conditions are unbearable. Basic needs are not being met.

We’ve got a number of citizens leaving and fleeing to other countries in search of better livelihoods.

We have been highly concerned which is why we prioritise this trip. It’s a continental issue.

Look South Africans right now are feeling like they are not getting access, the government of SA is carrying a large burden.

It’s the responsibility of the Zimbabwean government to make sure citizens are not running away and searching outside of the country.

The UZA president also criticised the new nomination fees that were recently announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Under the new fees structure, an aspiring presidential candidate will pay US$20 000, a member of parliament will pay a candidate fee of US$1 000 while local authority and Senate aspiring candidates will now pay a sum of US$200. Said Valerio:

It is concerning because this erodes credibility. I believe ZEC got the mandate to ensure elections are free and fair for citizens to actively participate whether they want to serve as candidates in the next government. This election is going to segregate us, citizens won’t participate freely.
