South Africa: Undocumented Foreigners Being Jailed To 6 Months Before Deportation - Report

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Home Affairs Department have stepped up their operations targeting undocumented foreigners.

Veteran radio broadcaster, Ezra Tshisa Sibanda said it is rumoured that those with no papers are being sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and to be deported later after serving the sentence. He posted on social media:

This comes as thousands of Zimbabweans are set to be deported at the end of this year following the termination of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) facility that allowed Zimbabwean workers, and students to be in the neighbouring country.
