Liverpool won the Community Shield after beating Manchester City 3-1 on Saturday night.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and the substitute Darwin Nunez got the goals, and their intensity was too great for a City side.
City got their only goal from Alvarez who poked a loose ball into the net from four yards after Foden was twice denied by Adrian.
Manchester also lost the Community Shield cup to Leicester City last year.
