Chimanimani FM Community Radio Launched

A third community radio station in Manicaland Province, Chimanimani FM community radio station, was launched on Friday.

Chimanimani FM is accessible at 100.0 on the FM dial. The province has two other community radio stations, Zimpapers-owned Diamond FM, and another radio station, Nyangani FM.

Speaking during the official launch of Chimanimani FM, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said:

Let us remind each other that these radio stations are not meant to propagate hate speech.

Remember there are laws that govern the content and operations of what comes out on air.

Therefore, we need these radio stations to promote development and enhance our disaster preparedness mechanisms rather than promote hate and division among us.

Chimanimani FM is one of the several community radio stations that were licensed last year.

It was developed as part of the World Bank-funded Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP), coordinated by UNOPS.

Chimanimani was one of the districts that were affected by Cyclone Idai, which left hundreds dead.

Several partners, that include Zimpapers, UNOPS, UNICEF, Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ), ZBC and Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC), among many others, delivered solidarity messages during the official launch.

They commended the government for opening up media space in the country.
