ZAPU President To Visit Jailed MRP Activists

The opposition ZAPU has expressed support for imprisoned CCC legislators as well as the nine members of the Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) who are jailed at Khami Prison, describing them as political prisoners.

In a statement this Thursday, 23 June, ZAPU National Spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu said the party’s president Michael Sibangilizwe Nkomo will on Friday visit the jailed the MRP members “in the spirit of solidarity and empathy”. Said Msongelwa:

In the spirit of solidarity and empathy, a legacy passed on to us by President Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, the ZAPU leadership, led by President Michael Sibangilizwe Nkomo, will pay a visit to the MRP9 political prisoners at Khami Prison. We call on all progressive forces to offer moral and financial support to these Comrades and their families.

ZAPU shares the frustrations of all marginalized people of Zimbabwe but may disagree on how to address this marginalization.

However, we stand in full solidarity with all political prisoners who are victims of lawfare applied generously by the Harare regime.

Our solidarity is extended to Hon Job Sikhala and Hon Godfrey Sithole and members of the media who are victimized for doing their job. We call on the state to respect the independence of the judiciary.

Corrective justice for offences must equal the crimes committed, if at all. The right to a fair trial and bail hearing must be respected.

Seven members of the MRP9 were sentenced to 33 months in jail while the other two were jailed for 36 months by Bulawayo magistrate Tavengwa Sangster for public violence.

Meanwhile, Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala and Chitungwiza North MP Godfrey Sithole were denied bail by a Harare magistrate on Wednesday.

They were arrested after violence rocked the Nyatsime area in Beatrice in the aftermath of the murder of CCC activist Moreblessing Ali.

Ali was allegedly murdered by suspected ZANU PF member Pius Mukandi, alias Jamba.
