UPDATE: Five "Police Officers" Driving Unmarked Vehicle Visit Prominent Journalist's House

Five people claiming to be police officers were at journalist Mduduzi Mathuthu’s home on Friday looking for him.

The ZimLive editor, who was away from home at the time of the visit, said the purported police officers were driving a car with no number plates. He tweeted:

Call from home, 5 “police officers” driving a car with no number plates at my house, apparently looking for me.

In an update, Mathuthu said the visitors said they were from Office 12 at Law and Order at the Bulawayo Central Police Station but did not specify the crime he allegedly committed. He said:

Many thanks to Cdes @misazimbabwe who have deployed lawyer Nqobani Sithole. The visitors have left my house with a message that I must come to Office 12 at Law and Order at the Bulawayo Central Police Station. Still don’t know what crime I have committed.

I am further advised the people at my house were led by Detective Sergeant Patrice Nyanhete of Law and Order. A visit from that section is never a good thing.

That’s where political charges are cooked. Still waiting to hear from the lawyer about what I am supposed to have done.

In July 2020, police stormed Mathuthu’s home but produced a search warrant bearing the wrong address.

Police accused Mathuthu of keeping and manufacturing subversive materials and inducing Zimbabweans to engage in public violence on 31 July 2020.

Mathuthu later revealed that police raided his house, found him absent and ordered his sister to reveal his whereabouts.

They then took her even though she was not a journalist or political activist.

Mathuthu is a prominent investigative journalist and has been at the forefront in exposing high-level corruption.

He gained international acclaim after he exposed corruption amounting to US$60 million in the Ministry of Health and Child Care (the Draxgate Scandal).
