"Elections Now A Divisive Rather Than A Unifying Factor" - ZEC

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has said elections in the country have become divisive instead of being a unifying factor.

The electoral body also claimed that elections in the country were now a security issue.

ZEC maintains that the poor public response to its voter registration exercises this year was because Zimbabweans do not trust its management of the electoral processes.

These remarks were made by ZEC deputy chairperson Rodney Kiwa at a pre-delimitation stakeholders’ meeting with journalists in Harare yesterday. Said Kiwa:

The 2023 harmonised elections are literally around the corner, the election mood is obviously palpable. Elections are also exercises in the management of emotions, and politicians are masters in whipping them. Elections have become a national security issue.

Elections have become a divisive rather than a unifying factor in this country. We have a country to build for future generations, let us all leave a legacy that will be admired by our children which is anchored on tolerance and responsible leadership.

Before, during and after the March 26 by-elections, opposition political parties accused ZEC of bias toward the ruling ZANU PF adding that the commission needs to be disbanded for the 2023 elections to be credible.

The commission denies the allegations saying politicians want to gain mileage by misleading the electorate.

ZEC says the accusations of election rigging were causing voter apathy as the electorate was concluding that casting votes won’t change anything in the governance of the country.
