Men Caught With Dried Zebra, Lion Meat Worth US$26K

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of one Freeman Moyo and a 16-year-old boy over poaching and they were Found with dried zebra, and lion meat.

Police say the value of killed animals is over US$26 000. Said police in a report this Monday:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Freeman Moyo (38) and a male juvenile (16) for contravening section 5 of Trapping of Animals Control Act Chapter 20:21. The suspects set 50 wire snares at Sentinel Safaris, Beitbridge on 07/05/22 and caught four impalas before game scouts apprehended Freeman Moyo. Investigations led to the recovery of some dried lion and zebra meat loaded in shangani bags in a Green Horse Bus destined for Gwanda. Meanwhile, the value of the killed animals is US $26 500.

Poachers have been killing animals in the game and national parks. Most victims of poaching are rhinos, elephants and fish with the first two species being sought for ivory which has high returns.

Punishment varies depending on the animals killed with some attracting a prolonged jail time.

In a related matter, two elephants that had been found loitering in Chiteni Village under Chief Ndanga, Zaka, were shot and killed by the Zimparks after villagers reported the matter to the police. The meat was given to the villagers, according to Information Secretary, Nick Mangwana.

Human-Wildlife Conflict is a serious issue in Zimbabwe.
