Woman Raped After She Pursued A Thief Who Snatched Her Groceries

A Chinhoyi woman was raped by a 19-year-old man who had snatched her groceries and fled.

The woman was on her way home from shopping when the suspect, Ernest Mungazi, grabbed the plastic bags containing her groceries and ran away.

She refused to give up and instead gave chase and caught up with Mungazi and demanded her groceries.

However, Mungazi proved to be more powerful than her and he wrestled and overpowered the woman and raped her.

The woman made a police report and was referred to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for a medical examination which confirmed the sexual attack.

Mungazi recently appeared before Chinhoyi regional magistrate Ignatius Mugova facing rape charges.

He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison but will serve an effective 12 years in jail after 3 years were conditionally suspended.

Prosecutor Nyasha Sibesha told the court that on 3 October 2020, at around 5 PM, Mungazi met the 19-year-old complainant while coming from Chinhoyi’s main rank.

The two teenagers allegedly started walking together towards the Brundish suburb.

The State further alleged that along the way, Mungazi suddenly grabbed the complainant’s groceries and fled, prompting the complainant to pursue him.

Mungazi allegedly later stopped at a secluded building and waited for the woman to arrive.

When the complainant arrived, Mungazi allegedly violently tore her undergarments and pushed her to the ground before raping her once.
