The floods that have displaced at least 40 000 people followed four months of rain in one day last week.

The government put South Africa in a national state of disaster after a recently suspended two-year spell in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Some communities have been left without power and water and were also cut off because roads and bridges have collapsed.

February is usually the wettest month in South Africa. The latest development could be due to climate change.
