ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON FRIDAY 15 APRIL 2022 VALID UNTIL SUNDAY 17 APRIL 2022.

PREAMBLE

The cloud band that entered the country from Botswana through Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South has spread to cover Bulawayo, Midlands and Masvingo Provinces by yesterday afternoon under a generally northerly airflow.

This resulted in scattered thunderstorms with some of the highest rainfall amounts being 23mm (Bulawayo, Goetz), 23mm (Chartworth, Serima Mission), 17mm (Chivhu), 13mm (Zvishavane), 12mm (Gweru), 10mm (Centenary, Agritex), and 8mm (Masvingo). In the meantime, more moisture is infiltrating the country through the south-east

FORECAST

The convergence of moisture from the north-west with that from the southeast should result in scattered thunderstorms in Mashonaland West, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands and Masvingo Provinces as well as parts of Manicaland and Harare Metropolitan TOMORROW, SATURDAY 16 APRIL 2022.

It should be mostly cloudy, humid and warm by day becoming mild at night. Localized heavy rains are anticipated especially over high ground (namely along the main watershed that extends along the Bulawayo – Harare highway).

IMPACTS

  • Thunder and Lightning may affect your plans, please plan with the weather in mind.
  • Lightning may still strike from a distant cloud, even when the sky overhead is clear.
  • Localized heavy rains remain a potential, these may result in flash flooding in areas with poor drainage or impervious surfaces.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • When thunder roars, it is best to be indoors. If outdoors, please find shelter immediately; do not shelter under trees or in an isolated shed. Do not ride at the back of an open truck or a tractor.
  • Do not cross flooded rivers and swollen streams whether on foot or in a vehicle as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to sweep away a vehicle. Avoid driving on a road covered by water especially at night or during downpours when it is more difficult to recognize flood dangers. Even if no heavy rains have occurred in your area, they may have occurred upstream.
