“We Will Always Be The Governing Party” – ZANU PF

The ruling ZANU PF party has vowed that it will never surrender power to opposition parties, saying it will “rule for a very long time”.

This was said by ZANU PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu in Harare while officiating at a send-off ceremony of 36 party members set for a training stint at the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre in Tanzania which specialises in policy and leadership studies.

Mpofu described ZANU PF as one of the most formidable political parties in southern Africa. Said the former Mines minister:

We are going to be in power for a very long time. We are not going to surrender power. We will always be the governing party.

His remarks come amid accusations that the ruling party connives with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to manipulate electoral results.

It is also being accused of using state security forces including police, soldiers, central intelligence organisation agents, and traditional leaders to intimidate the electorate into voting for ZANU PF.

In 2008, opposition MDC candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, defeated ZANU PF candidate, Robert Mugabe but could not get into office after ZEC claimed that he had not attained the 50+1 votes needed.

There was a runoff election that was preceded by violence against the supporters of the opposition party.
