Pope Francis Condemns Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

Pope Francis on Sunday condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, calling the bombing of children’s hospitals and civilian targets a barbaric act.

The Pope’s remarks come amid heightened fighting between the Russian and Ukrainian forces for the 18th straight day since the 24th of February when Russian president Vladimir Putin authorised military action on Ukraine over alleged human rights abuses by the Kyiv government.

News agencies reported that the Pope made the remarks after the weekly Angelus prayers. He is quoted as saying the invasion of Ukraine is “unacceptable armed aggression” and must stop. He added:

In the name of God… stop this massacre.

Ukrainian cities risked being reduced to cemeteries.

News agency Reuters reported that at least 35 people were killed while 134 others were injured after the attack on a Ukrainian military base in Lviv.

According to regional governor Maksym Kozytskyy, the Russian planes allegedly fired around 30 rockets at the facility, adding that some of them were intercepted before they hit the targets.

The 360 square kilometres facility is one of Ukraine’s biggest and the largest in the western part of the war-hit country.

About two million Ukrainians are said to have left Ukraine to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
