The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has barred members of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) from marching to Parliament this Friday to submit a petition in a move aimed at pushing the Government to improve teachers’ working conditions.
The PTUZ wrote to the Clerk of Parliament requesting Parliament to facilitate the handing over of the petition to relevant office bearers.
PTUZ secretary-general Raymond Majongwe had requested police escort in a letter addressed to the police dated 25 February 2022.
In response to Majongwe’s request on Tuesday, the acting officer commanding Harare Central district one Chidakwa said PTUZ should send a few individuals to deliver the petition. Wrote Chidhakwa:
Please be advised that I am not in a position to sanction the march due to the following reasons.
Some rogue elements may take advantage of the situation and hijack your march and further their own ill-conceived agenda.
Majongwe told NewsDay on Thursday that the PTUZ was considering taking the legal route against the police ban, saying “there is no justification to stop us from handing over the petition.”
