Mwonzora Distances MDC-T From Court Application To Stop By-elections

MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora has distanced his party from a Constitutional Court application by Tapera Sengweni, and three others, who are seeking to stop the 26 March by-elections.

Sengweni, who is reportedly an MDC-T legal advisor and Mwonzora’s close ally, argued in his application that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) failed to hold elections within the 90-day timeframe prescribed by the laws of the country.

In a post on Twitter in which he tagged journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, Mwonzora said the MDC-T has nothing to do with the application and will not interfere with citizens seeking to assert their rights. He said:

The MDC-T has neither filed nor sponsored any court application to stop by-elections. The application being circulated has been filed by a group of 4 Zimbabweans. We do not interfere with Zimbabweans seeking to assert their rights.

Responding to Mwonzora, Chin’ono described the MDC-T leader as “evil”. Said Chin’ono:

Dhaggi @DMwonzora we are not fools! At the heart of what you are doing is to prolong councils as dysfunctional so that your handlers can continue LOOTING councils without legitimate oversight

You are an EVIL man Dhaggi because what you are doing is literally killing Zimbabweans.

In his founding affidavit, Tapera also argued that Zimbabwe cannot afford to hold by-elections this month and should wait for general elections that are due in 2023. He said:

As a small economy, Zimbabwe has financial challenges that are affecting the greater majority of its population.

The government is struggling to pay its employees a living wage. It is not prudent to drag the country into another plebiscite whose outcome does not change the numerical configuration of parliament in any way.
