Expecting Mothers Petition Parliament Over Closure Of 9 Clinics In Harare
Some pregnant Highfield women have petitioned parliament over their denial to access maternal health care services at their local council clinics.
The petition has been influenced by the closure of nine (9) council clinics that offer postnatal health care and other health services.
This has negatively affected their access to maternal health care services.
In some cases, the health personnel are demanding an extra payment of US$40-US$50 as a precondition for admittance to access maternal health services of delivering.
The women recommend the City of Harare to constitute an Investigation Committee on the deterioration of maternal health services in Council clinics as in terms of the Urban Councils Act 29:15 (100) (a) and (b)(i) to come up with clear recommendations and strategies to solve the perennial corruption and poor maternal health services in Council clinics.

They recommend the Minister of Local Government to ensure that the City of Harare develops an anti-corruption policy that will set standards and guidelines on dealing with corruption in Council clinics
They also want the minister to cause the City of Harare to explain the rationale of closing nine clinics.
The women also want the local authority to increase financial commitment towards health service provision.
Harare Council has closed nine of its clinics due to a shortage of nurses who have been resigning and going to foreign countries citing poor remuneration and risky working conditions.
