Mugabe’s Donated Computers Lying Idle At Rural School, 12 Years Later

More than 100 computers donated to Arda Transau secondary school in 2010 by the late former president, Robert Mugabe, are still lying idle and gathering dust at the institution due to lack of electricity.

The computers were handed over to the school 12 years ago by now President Emmerson Mnangagwa who was a minister at the time.

Arda Transau Development Committee chairperson, John Makuyana told NewZimbabwe.com that parents are failing to raise funds needed by the power utility to connect the school to the national electricity grid. Said Makuyana:

In 2010, the late president donated 100 computers at the secondary school, but they have not been utilised by students to conduct their studies due to lack of electricity.

Parents are failing to raise funds needed to connect the school to electricity due to abject poverty.

We tried to install solar, but our efforts hit a brick wall as the system failed to provide sufficient power.

We are kindly asking the government to help us in connecting the school to the national power grid.

Arda Transau is a government-owned farm located in Odzi, Manicaland province, about 24 kilometres west of Mutare.

Villagers from Chiadzwa were moved off their ancestral land to make way for the largest diamond field in the country and resettled on the farm.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, the Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Manicaland, Nokuthula Matsikenyere, said she will engage mining companies in Chiadzwa, so that they assist in the electrification of the school. She said:

Let me get in touch with the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) so that we may map a way forward.

It’s not good for that school to operate without electricity because, without power clean water, e-learning and other necessities will be a challenge within the learning environment.
