Doctors: "End The Rural-urban Divide In Accessing COVID-19 Vaccines"

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) has called upon the government of Zimbabwe to ensure that there is equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the country. In a statement to commemorate International Human Rights Day (IHRD), ZADHR bemoaned the rural-urban divide on access to vaccines. Pindula News presents the statement issued by ZADHR:

STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

10 DECEMBER 2021

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Human Rights Day (IHRD) 2021 under the theme “Equality: Reducing Inequalities and Advancing Human Rights”. ZADHR notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing inequalities which the world had already been afflicted with.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed gaps in access to resources, resilience capacity and recovery between the global West and the South and between the poor and the rich. Limited access to vital COVID-19 supplies such as vaccines has also compounded the situation.

ZADHR contends that equal and equitable access to vaccines stands tall in eradicating the scourge of the pandemic. We call upon the developed world to support initiatives by the global South to end COVID-19 through stopping the hoarding of vaccines and extending them to countries of limited resources by strengthening the response capacity of the COVAX facility. The world cannot fight and win against the pandemic in an environment of inequity and inequality. Similarly, Zimbabwe must end the rural-urban divide in accessing critical COVID-19 vaccines through ensuring equitable distribution and making the vaccines accessible to all eligible Zimbabweans across the board.

We also urge the government of Zimbabwe to put in place measures to ensure the constitutionally-guaranteed right to healthcare is enjoyed by all Zimbabweans. More specifically, we call upon the government to increase its fiscal investments in the health sector, improve the human resources for the health situation, and ensure that basic services in maternal, child and reproductive health are accessible to all those in need.

Lastly, in view of the Omicron variant, we urge all persons of the World and Zimbabwe, in particular, to continue to uphold the World Health Organisation (WHO) regulations to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. #MASKUP *SANITIZE #SOCIALDISTANCE
