Hopewell Chin'ono Distances Himself From LGBTIQ Campaign

Prominent journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono has distanced himself from an upcoming event organised by LGBTIQ, an association of organizations promoting, representing and protecting the rights and interests of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Intersex people in Zimbabwe. He said his name has been used dishonestly to ride on my public profile. He said:

It is unfortunate that whoever is behind these events has chosen to put my name without my consent. I have NOTHING to do with these events, and it is a LIE that I would be there!

My name has been used dishonestly to ride on my public profile. It is WRONG and UNPROFESSIONAL!

In their statement, LGBTIQ + SECTOR said this year, they are focusing on the issue of “femicide or the gender-related killing of women as well as issues to do with homophobia. Read their statement:

We are an association of organizations promoting, representing and protecting the rights and interests of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Intersex people in Zimbabwe. Yes, we exist!

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the Global 16 Days Campaign. Inspired by the original vision and history of the Campaign, which focused on raising awareness about violence against women (VAW), and considering the continuing impunity for femicide, this year the Campaign in Zimbabwe will focus on the issue of “femicide or the gender-related killing of women as well as issues to do with homophobia.”

In addition to the anniversary theme, the Campaign will continue its program activities to end gender-based violence (GBV) and homophobia in Zimbabwe, drawing on legal standards outlined in the international laws on human rights.

In line with our mission in the country, starting on the 1st of December 2021. we will begin public awareness campaigns in all provinces in the form of roadshows to educate the communities against GBV and homophobic practices in our society. The series of events will be formally graced by high-level representation from Crisis Coalition Zimbabwe and Mr Hopewell Chin’ono who is also a top human rights activist in the country.

COVID-I9 has presented us with new challenges which call for individual and collective solutions. Let’s continue our efforts all year round from 16 to 365 days of activism, to advance the human rights of women and the LGBTIQ+ community.

A world without violence and hatred is possible and this moment demands unparalleled courage and joint action to make this vision a reality. More information, including about upcoming events, and advocacy materials as well as opportunities to contribute to our campaign will be disseminated by the Campaign soon
